Breathe Easy: Celebrating National Healthy Lung Month with Our Advanced Respiratory Solutions

It’s easy to forget about your lungs – that is until you have a breathing problem. Sometimes, respiratory conditions don’t cause symptoms until the underlying breathing problem has already impaired your lungs. To help bring awareness to our lungs, many healthcare professionals participate in National Healthy Lung Month every October.

National Healthy Lung Month is important because it reminds us to take care of our lungs before we have trouble breathing. In honor of this important awareness month, we’ve put together a few essential tips to help you breathe easier and keep your lungs in optimal condition. Ready to get started? Here are some ways to ensure your lungs stay healthy and strong.

How to Observe Healthy Lung Month - Show Your Lungs Some Love

Do your breathing treatments as recommended

If your doctor has prescribed a nebulizer solution for your lungs or other medications, follow their instructions as closely as possible. Nebulizers are medical devices that turn liquid medications into a mist that you can inhale deeply into your lungs. This mist delivers medication directly to the affected areas, which can be particularly effective for treating respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD (a group of diseases that include emphysema and chronic bronchitis), or bronchitis. It’s also important to know that there are two types of nebulizers to use:

  • Tabletop Nebulizers: These are generally more robust and need to be plugged in to work. They are ideal for home use where portability isn't a concern. They often come with additional features like adjustable mist flow, making it easier to customize your treatment.
  • Portable Nebulizers: Battery-operated and compact, these nebulizers are convenient for on-the-go use. They are perfect if you travel frequently or need medication while away from home. However, they may lack some of the customizable features found in tabletop models.

Quit smoking

Linked to 80 to 90 percent of all cases, cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer. Smoking can also cause other respiratory problems, such as COPD and asthma.

Quitting smoking can provide immediate respiratory benefits, as your lungs begin to heal almost immediately after you quit.

If you have lung disease, ask your doctor about pulmonary rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program that focuses on exercises to improve lung function and provides education about your lungs and lung disease. In this program, you’ll focus on breathing exercises to reduce shortness of breath.

Stop vaping

Some chemicals in vaping juice can be bad for your lungs. These chemicals include highly addictive nicotine, the herbicide acrolein that causes irreversible lung damage, diacetyl, which causes “popcorn lung,” and cadmium, which causes breathing problems.

Wear a mask

Wearing a mask in public can help protect your lungs from infectious respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19 and influenza. You can also wear a mask or respirator while cleaning, painting, or doing other home projects to protect your lungs from dangerous fumes.

Check your air quality

When possible, stay inside on smoggy or smokey days. Change the filter on your air conditioner every three months or sooner as needed. If you use a portable nebulizer or desktop nebulizer, replace the tubing and filter as recommended.

Protect your child’s lungs

Learn and address the signs of respiratory problems in children. Some kids experience minor shortness of breath when they exercise, but trouble breathing may be a symptom of a more serious problem, such as asthma, lung disease, pneumonia, or even heart problems.

Your pediatrician may recommend treatment with a children’s nebulizer.

Get a portable nebulizer

If you need to take treatments on the go or live in a place with frequent power outages, get a portable nebulizer so you never miss a treatment. Portable nebulizer compressors run on batteries; you can also plug them into a car outlet.
